MORE ON CHARITY HUSH MONEY PAYMENTS

New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd on June 5, 2012 weighed in on payments by Cardinal Timothy Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York to pedophile priests.

She appropriately wrote that “Cardinal Dolan insisted through a spokesman that it was ‘charity,’ not ‘payoffs.’   But if you were the parent of a boy abused by a priest who went away with 20,000 bucks, maybe ‘charity’ is not the word that would come to mind.”

Hush money for continued cooperation in the cover-up is what comes to my mind.

CARDINAL CLAIMS RIGHT TO MAKE CHARITY PAYMENTS TO PEDOPHILE PRIESTS

The New York Post on June 4th reported a dispute between The New York Times and Cardinal Timothy Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York over continued payments of money by the church to pedophile priests with a history of childhood sexual abuse of minors.  It appeared the Times ran a story which offended the Cardinal regarding payments of money to pedophile priests.  As reported by the Post, his spokesman replied that there was no “payoff” to pedophile priests, only “charity.”

CRIMINAL CASE AGAINST PHILADELPHIA PRIEST PERSONNEL DIRECTOR GOES TO THE JURY

CRIMINAL CASE AGAINST PHILADELPHIA PRIEST PERSONNEL DIRECTOR GOES TO THE JURY

As reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer yesterday, final arguments were presented on Thursday to the jury in the criminal trial of William J. Lynn, the priest personnel director in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for many years.

The Roman Catholic church seems to have a worldwide play-book to defend itself, its child abuser priests and their bosses whenever they face criminal or civil charges.

After this eleven week trial, as reported, defense arguments to try to save this priest from conviction for the crime of child endangerment or conspiracy included the following.

SISTER MAUREEN TAKES ON THE PHILADELPHIA ARCHBISHOP

I recommend that anyone concerned about justice for survivors of childhood sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic church read Sister Maureen Paul Turlish’s column which just appeared in the May 26, 2012 Delaware County Daily Times.  You can find it online at

Sister Maureen is an unflagging advocate for justice for all survivors and a throwback to the days of Dorothy Day and others who sought justice in that church for the least of those found in our society.   She is what we always imagined a nun to be and is certainly one of those the Pope in Rome recently blasted when he declared war on nuns in the U.S. for being too uppity, too concerned for the least in society, and too out of step with the male dominated managers of that church.

LARGE $700,000 WISCONSIN JURY VERDICT FOR TWO SURVIVORS OF CHILDHOOD SEXUAL ABUSE!

On May 21st, it was reported that a jury awarded Todd Merryfield $225,000 and Troy Merryfield $475,000, as the sexual abuse victims of a Roman Catholic priest when they were boys.

As reported from Wisconsin, a jury there found the Green Bay Catholic Diocese committed fraud when it allowed a priest to continue serving despite rumors of his inappropriate behavior with children.

Todd and Troy Merryfield contended that the diocese knew John Feeney had an inappropriate history with children before he molested both brothers in 1978 when we was employed at a local church.
