PA Monsignor Convicted!

Just minutes ago the New York Times reported that after a ten week trial and weeks of jury deliberations Monsignor William Lynn was convicted by a Philadelphia jury of child endangerment.  This high Roman Catholic Church official now faces a possible prison term of up to 3 1/2 to 7 years.

Lynn’s attorneys tried a blame the Cardinal defense claiming Lynn had no power to stop pedophile priests from abusing children and that instead now deceased Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua was the one who was a fault, not just a lowly priest far down in the power structure from the Pope and his local Cardinal.  The reader may remember that when it got too hot in Boston for Cardinal Law during investigations of cover-ups of child abuse in that Archdiocese the Cardinal fled to Rome where he has been hiding out ever since.  But the blame the Cardinal defense did not fool this jury.

It appears from this common sense conviction by a Philadelphia jury that more days of reckoning will occur for high church officials if local prosecutors are serious about protecting children and seek to challenge its power.

The Philadelphia District Attorneys office is to be commended for pursuing such officials  for more than ten years now through the terms of Lynne Abraham and now Seth Williams.
